China is the single largest export destination for India, followed by Bangladesh and Pakistan. Marginal quantities are also exported to Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan and Malaysia. Cotton exports to China have accounted for about 80% in 2011-12 as compared with about 54% a year before.
Cotton market began witnessing dowtrend since the last two years in the backdrop of changes in Chinese policy, which has impacted the white gold market throughout the world. China, the world’s largest user, is curbing its cotton imports, in a bid to help reduce its cotton reserves. The country kept its import quota unchanged at 8,94,000 tons for 2015-16 as well, which is as per World Trade Organization (WTO) norms.
